It's Not Hansel and Gretel by Josh Funk

Interest Level: K-3; Reading Level: 1.8

Do you think you know the story of Hansel and Gretel? Well think again! This is Hansel and Gretel (wait, excuse me, it's actually Gretel and Hansel) like you've never read before! It was a time of great famine so Hansel and Gretel's parents needed to get rid of their children because they couldn't feed them (Seriously? Maybe, maybe not). As their father leads them into the woods, they get lost and stumble upon the evil witch's candy house. The evil witch lures them into her house with plans of eating them, but things don't go quite like the witch has planned. Do Hansel and Gretel (I'm sorry, I mean Gretel and Hansel) escape from the evil witch or does she end up eating them?  Will their parents come in and save the day or did they really get rid of them? And what about the narrator? Will he be able to guide the story the way it is supposed to go or does he lose all control? To find out the answers you have to read It's Not Hansel and Gretel!

Josh Funk and Edwardian Taylor do it again with their second It's Not a Fairy Tale book. This second books does not disappoint! If you want a book that will make you laugh out loud and make kids (and even grown ups) cry with laughter, this is the book for you! The way Josh Funk has the narrator interact with the characters and change things up is absolutely hilarious! And the way Edwardian Taylor illustrates the book is precious! If the words don't make you double over with laughter, then the illustrations will! Josh and Edwardian make an incredible team (I like to call them the dynamic duo)!! Do Not Miss This Book!!!

Interest Level: 3-6; Reading Level: 5.7

Would you like to be in the business of chasing monsters and spirits? Evangeline is from a long line of haunt huntresses and fighting these demons is in her blood... or so she thinks. Whenever she tries to go off on her own things don't always go as planned and she seems to make things worse.  Plus, every haunt huntress gets a familiar, some type of animal that is fiercely loyal, and Evangeline still has not found hers yet. She is beginning to doubt that she even has haunt huntress powers. Then her Gran accepts a job in the big city of New Orleans to help a family whose wife/mom is very sick. It is not long before they realized that Mrs. Midsomer has been bitten by a  rougarou, a human that turns into a werewolf-type beast. At the next full moon Mrs. Midsomer will turn into a rougarou and if she makes her first kill, then she can never turn back. But if Gran can kill the alpha rougarou before all of that happens, then she will be released. This task seems impossible when Gran falls, breaks her leg, and is taken into surgery right before the moon is full.  Gran's last words before she is knocked out is for Evangeline to run away back to the bayou. This is Evangeline's plan when she realizes that she is not a haunt huntress, but that is not what happens. Does Evangeline really not have any haunt huntress powers? Will Mrs. Midsomer turn into a rougarou and make her first kill? Is there anything that Evangeline do to save Mrs. Midsomer and her son, Julian? Read this high-paced, action-packed, slightly funny about family, friends, and finding yourself.

We all get sick, right? But what about Santa Claus? What happens when he gets a high fever and sore throat on Christmas Eve? How in the world will the Christmas presents get delivered? This is where the Holiday Heroes come in! Santa Claus can count on his friends - the Tooth Fairy, the Leprechaun, the Witch, and the Easter Bunny - to help out. The only problem is that they don't know how to be Santa Claus, they only know how to be themselves. The Easter Bunny hides the Christmas presents around the houses, the Tooth Fairy hides them under pillows, the Leprechaun just looks for loose change, and the Witch turns the cookies to spiders. Will Santa be able to save Christmas by helping his friends do Christmas the right way? Will the heroes be able to undo what they have already done? Will the holiday heroes save Christmas? Read this preciously illustrated, humorous story about friends helping out friends.

This is such an adorable story about helping out a friend in need. Kids will love this colorful and funny book about all of their favorite holiday characters. Do not miss this one this holiday season!

How cool would it be to live in an apartment that had a magical library that had thousands and thousands of books? Dream come true, right? Wrong! Not this apartment and not this library! Alex sneaks out one night to destroy a book of his writings that he loves so much, but on the way he gets tricked to go into an apartment in his building, the apartment of a witch named Natacha. There is one other child there, Yasmin, who tells him there is no escape from the enchanted apartment and his only hope of survival is to tell Natacha scary stories. He still has his own horror stories that he has written, but they are too painful to read. Natacha sets him up in her magical library and he is given a pencil and paper to write more stories. Alex gets sidetracked by looking at all of the books. When he comes across a warning from a previous child who was there, Alex now has hope of escape. Can Alex and Yasmin find more messages to help break them out of the apartment? Or will Alex run out of stories and out of time before Natacha does away with him? Read this incredibly scary story about scary stories and friendship!

I absolutely loved this story! The kids in my library are always looking for more and more scary stories. I can't wait to put this one in their hands. Who wouldn't love a book about witches, magical cats, scary stories, and friends! Don't miss this one!!

What if you heard ghost stories about an old woman who takes a child and keeps her for fifty years? Would you believe the story or think it is just a tall tale? What if you found out you actually just moved into the house where the last girl was taken? Would you be scared yet? This is exactly what happened to Daniel and his sister Erica. After their dad lost his high-paying job, they moved to a run-down shack in the country. They didn't fit in at school, their parents started fighting all the time, and no one in that house was happy. To make things worse, this kid named Brody kept telling them about "Old Auntie" who was a witch and took a girl every fifty years. Daniel and Erica didn't believe him at all... until the night that Erica went missing in the woods.
Does Daniel have the courage it takes go into the woods by himself and try to save his sister, or will he sit back and watch his family fall apart?

This is a great spooky story for all ages. Mary Downing Hahn does a fantastic job of drawing you into this small little town and feeling every emotion that Daniel and Emily feel - sadness, loneliness, and fear. This is a must read if you like to be scared!
