Imagine being a 13-year-old girl living with your family in a small apartment in Havana in 1961. What if you saw a poster at school that Fidel Castro was starting a campaign to make the nation literate in one year and you wanted to be a part of it? This is Lora's dream but not her parents dream. Lora knows that she can go into the remote countryside and help these people learn to read and write. The problem is, Lora has never ever been away from home and this mission could be dangerous. There are those that have died for the cause. Despite all objections, Lora does go and the life lessons she learns, the people she affects, and the love for other families goes far deeper than she can ever imagine.
This book had such an impact on me. The courage that Lora and so many others had and her love for teaching reading really made me appreciate all that these people did to help others. This is a must read!!
