Imagine that you are completely alone with no friends and no family and you live in an orphanage. Now imagine having a bully in this orphanage that torments you day and night. Now imagine that you are a girl who has lost her mother, had to move into a new place, and your dad works 24/7 so you are all alone with no friends. Imagine your view from your bedroom is an old abandoned orphanage, yet you see a girl in the window every night. Thornhill is a parallel story of two girls, one from 1982 and one from 2016. Mary's story is told through her diary from 1982. Ella's story is told in pictures from 2016. This is a very creepy and mysterious story that would be a scary read for any elementary or middle school reader.
Thornhill is a story that I just could not put down. It is part fiction and part graphic novel. There are a few cuss words that I wish were not in there, but other than that this is a must read for the reader who loves scary/suspense/mystery.

5 out of 5 stars!!!!!
What if you heard ghost stories about an old woman who takes a child and keeps her for fifty years? Would you believe the story or think it is just a tall tale? What if you found out you actually just moved into the house where the last girl was taken? Would you be scared yet? This is exactly what happened to Daniel and his sister Erica. After their dad lost his high-paying job, they moved to a run-down shack in the country. They didn't fit in at school, their parents started fighting all the time, and no one in that house was happy. To make things worse, this kid named Brody kept telling them about "Old Auntie" who was a witch and took a girl every fifty years. Daniel and Erica didn't believe him at all... until the night that Erica went missing in the woods.
Does Daniel have the courage it takes go into the woods by himself and try to save his sister, or will he sit back and watch his family fall apart?
This is a great spooky story for all ages. Mary Downing Hahn does a fantastic job of drawing you into this small little town and feeling every emotion that Daniel and Emily feel - sadness, loneliness, and fear. This is a must read if you like to be scared!
